Memory as Resistance: A Tribute to WHRDs no longer with us
AWID’s Tribute is an art exhibition honouring feminists, women’s rights and social justice activists from around the world who are no longer with us.
In 2020, we are taking a turn
This year’s tribute tells stories and shares narratives about those who co-created feminist realities, have offered visions of alternatives to systems and actors that oppress us, and have proposed new ways of organising, mobilising, fighting, working, living, and learning.
49 new portraits of feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) are added to the gallery. While many of those we honour have passed away due to old age or illness, too many have been killed as a result of their work and who they are.
This increasing violence (by states, corporations, organized crime, unknown gunmen...) is not only aimed at individual activists but at our joint work and feminist realities.
The stories of activists we honour keep their legacy alive and carry their inspiration forward into our movements’ future work.
The portraits of the 2020 edition are designed by award winning illustrator and animator, Louisa Bertman.
AWID would like to thank the families and organizations who shared their personal stories and contributed to this memorial. We join them in continuing the remarkable work of these activists and WHRDs and forging efforts to ensure justice is achieved in cases that remain in impunity.

The Tribute was first launched in 2012
It took shape with a physical exhibit of portraits and biographies of feminists and activists who passed away at AWID’s 12th International Forum, in Turkey. It now lives as an online gallery, updated every year.
To date, 467 feminists and WHRDs are featured.

Cada tres o cuatro años, AWID celebra su principal evento internacional. Es el mayor foro mundial que concentra a los movimientos feministas y de justicia de género en toda su diversidad. Es una reunión global de activistas feministas, movimientos aliados, académicxs, donantes y formuladorxs de políticas. Los Foros alternan entre distintas regiones y países del Sur global.

Trois bateaux, un cheval et un taxi : les féministes du Pacifique au Forum de l’AWID
Cette histoire raconte comment un groupe toujours plus diversifié de féministes du Pacifique s’est organisé au fil des ans pour participer aux Forums de l’AWID et comment ce qu’elles ont découvert, appris et vécu au cours de ce processus les a transformées à la fois personnellement, en tant qu’organisations et en tant que mouvement. Elle illustre à quel point les Forums sont des espaces offrant aux régions qui ont tendance à être mondialement marginalisées ou ignorées la possibilité d’établir une forte présence au sein du mouvement féministe, laquelle peut ensuite être reproduite dans d’autres espaces internationaux de défense des droits des femmes.

En quoi ce Forum sera-t-il différent ?
Avec jusqu'à 2 500 participant·e·s sur place et 3 000 participant·e·s virtuel·e·s/hybrides, il s'agira du plus grand Forum de l'AWID jamais organisé. Nous envisageons de mettre en place de multiples espaces qui vous permettront d'établir des liens significatifs, d'apprendre, d'échanger, d'avoir des échanges stratégiques, de guérir et de fêter. C'est la première fois que nous nous réunissons dans cet espace depuis la pandémie, et nous brûlons d’impatience.

About Where is the Money? research
The global survey is a key pillar of the third iteration of our action-oriented research: “Where is the Money for Feminist Organizing?” (in short, Where is the Money or WITM). The results of the survey will be further elaborated and explored through in-depth conversations with activists and funders and cross-referenced with other existing analysis and research on the state of funding for feminists and gender equality globally.
The full “Where is the Money for Feminist Organizing” report will be published in 2026.

Discursos anti-derechos
Los discursos anti-derechos continúan evolucionando. Además de utilizar argumentos relacionados con la religión, la cultura y la tradición, los actores antiderechos cooptan el lenguaje de la justicia social y los derechos humanos para ocultar sus verdaderas agendas y ganar legitimidad.
A Strategy, a Market and New Voices: Indigenous Women and the AWID Forums
The Forum was a key space for the Indigenous Women’s Movement (IWM) in its relationship to feminism. At AWID Forums, they developed engagement strategies that would then apply at other spaces like the United Nations. In that process, both indigenous women and feminists movements were transformed: new voices and issues emerged and feminists started to change their discourses and practices around land rights and spirituality, they understood collective rights better, and included the IWM in their events and agendas. Mónica Alemán and María Manuela Sequeira, from the IWM, shared this story of change.

Does AWID provide scholarships to attend the Forum?
Our Access Fund will offer a limited number of scholarships to fund the participation of activists who cannot otherwise make it, and don’t have relationships with funders who could cover their participation. So if you have other possibilities, please explore them. We will do our best to offer as many scholarships as we can, and will share more information about this process and how to apply in early 2024.
