Human Rights Council (HRC)

The Human Rights Council (HRC) is the key intergovernmental body within the United Nations system responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe. It holds three regular sessions a year: in March, June and September. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the secretariat for the HRC.

The HRC works by:

  • Debating and passing resolutions on global human rights issues and human rights situations in particular countries

  • Examining complaints from victims of human rights violations or activist organizations on behalf of victims of human rights violations

  • Appointing independent experts (known as “Special Procedures”) to review human rights violations in specific countries and examine and further global human rights issues

  • Engaging in discussions with experts and governments on human rights issues

  • Assessing the human rights records of all UN Member States every four and a half years through the Universal Periodic Review

AWID works with feminist, progressive and human rights partners to share key knowledge, convene civil society dialogues and events, and influence negotiations and outcomes of the session.

With our partners, our work will:

◾️ Monitor, track and analyze anti-rights actors, discourses and strategies and their impact on resolutions

◾️ Raise awareness of the findings of the 2017 and 2021 OURs Trends Reports.

◾️Support the work of feminist UN experts in the face of backlash and pressure

◾️Advocate for state accountability
 
◾️ Work with feminist movements and civil society organizations to advance rights related to gender and sexuality.

“I am a wonder… Therefore I have been born by a mother! As I begin to stutter, my life has been like no other…” - Ayanda Denge  (read the whole poem below)

Ayanda Denge was a transwomxn, sex worker, activist, poet. She was Xhosa, from Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. After travelling through different cities of the country, she moved to Cape Town. 

As a committed and fervent social justice activist, she fought for the rights of sex workers, trans persons, and for those of people living with HIV and AIDS. She was also a motivational speaker on cancer awareness, and campaigned for affordable and social housing, especially for poor and working-class people. Ayanda stood tall as a mountain against different and often abusive faces of discrimination. 

“Being transgender is not a double dose, but it’s a triple dose of stigmatisation and discrimination. You are discriminated against for your sexual identity, you are discriminated against for your work, and you are discriminated against for your HIV status.” - Ayanda Denge, 2016

She was acting chairperson at the Sex Workers Education and Advocacy Taskforce (SWEAT) and also worked as an Outreach Coordinator at Sisonke, a national sex workers’ movement in South Africa. 

“From us, from our regional head office, to SWEAT where I sit on the board, to Sisonke, a movement of sex workers in Cape Town. We all amalgamate, we have one cry and it’s a cry that is recognised internationally by international sex workers. We want decriminalisation of sex work.” - Ayanda Denge, 2016

She lived in the Ahmed Kathrada House, which was being occupied by the Reclaim the City campaign for social housing. In 2018, Ayanda was elected house leader. On 24 March 2019, she was stabbed to death in her room. The year prior, another resident was killed.

Reclaim the City draws a connection between the safety of the house residents and the Provincial Government withholding electricity and the human right to water: 

“We cannot separate the safety of women and LGBTQI people living in the occupation from the refusal by the Western Cape Provincial Government to turn the electricity and water back on at Ahmed Kathrada House.

The house is pitch black at night. We need lights to keep each other safe. It is as if the Province wishes to punish poor and working class people, whose only crime is that we needed a home. While they may disagree with our reasons for occupying, they should be ashamed of themselves for putting politics before the safety and dignity of residents of this city.

Rest in Peace comrade Ayanda Denge, we shall remember you as we carry the torch forward in the struggle for decent well-located housing.”

Como proceso, el Foro abarca mucho más que el momento en que nos reunimos. Durante todo el año estamos trabajando con organizaciones y grupos, profundizando nuestras relaciones con ellas, vinculándonos con movimientos locales para entender mejor sus problemas y crear soluciones juntxs. 

Como evento, el Foro tiene lugar cada tres o cuatro años en una región diferente del mundo y cristaliza todas las alianzas que hemos venido construyendo como parte de nuestro trabajo.

El Foro de AWID disuelve nuestros límites internos y externos, alberga discusiones en profundidad, colabora con el crecimiento personal y profesional, y fortalece a los movimientos por los derechos de las mujeres y la justicia de género.

El Foro responde a la urgencia de promover una participación y acción más sólidas y coordinadas por parte de lxs feministas, defensorxs de los derechos de las mujeres y de la justicia social, sus organizaciones y movimientos. También creemos que el Foro es más que un evento, ya que puede facilitar procesos que influyen en las ideas y las agendas de los movimientos feministas y de otros actores con quienes nos vinculamos.

El Foro pasó de ser una conferencia nacional con 800 participantes a un encuentro que reúne alrededor de 2000 feministas, líderes comunitarixs, activistas por la justicia social y agencias de financiamiento de todo el mundo. 

El próximo Foro de AWID tendrá lugar del 11 al 14 de enero de 2021 en Taipéi, Taiwán.

2016 - Futuros feministas: Construyendo poder colectivo por los derechos y la justicia (Costa de Sauipe, Brasil)

Dado el complejo mundo que enfrentamos hoy, el Foro de AWID 2016 no se centró en un ‘tema’ en particular, sino en la creación de formas más efectivas de trabajar juntxs.

Pese a las dificultades del contexto en el que se celebró este Foro (la epidemia del virus del Zika, una huelga de lxs trabajadorxs del servicio exterior brasileño, el juicio político a la presidenta Dilma Rousseff y la crisis que le siguió), se logró congregar a más de 1800 participantes de 120 países y territorios de todas las regiones del mundo. 

Lo que sucedió en el 13º Foro internacional de AWID:

  • Para el 96% de lxs participantes que respondieron a la encuesta de evaluación posterior al Foro, el evento fue una importante fuente de inspiración y energía.

  • El 98% de lxs participantes lo consideraron un importante espacio de convocatoria para los movimientos feministas, y manifestaron su esperanza de que AWID continúe organizado estos foros.

  • El 59% de quienes respondieron a la encuesta de evaluación del Foro declaró estar muy satisfechx con el Foro y el 34% algo satisfechx.

  • Se realizaron más de 150 sesiones en distintos formatos sobre diversos temas, desde la integridad y la libertad corporal, pasando por la violencia de género en el ámbito laboral, hasta estrategias de construcción de poder colectivo.

  • El primer Foro de Feminismos Negros, se celebró justo antes del Foro de AWID, y  reunió a 250 feministas negrxs de todo el mundo, para crear colectivamente un espacio de poder desde donde construir y fortalecer las conexiones intergeneracionales y transnacionales.

2012: Transformando el Poder Económico para Avanzar los Derechos de las Mujeres y la Justicia (Estambul, Turquía)

Foro Internacional AWID, Ciudad del Cabo, Sudáfrica, 2008

El 12° Foro de AWID se llevó a cabo en el año 2012 en Estambul, Turquía, bajo el título “Transformando el Poder Económico para Avanzar los Derechos de las Mujeres y la Justicia”. El Foro 2012 fue el más grande y diverso que hemos organizado hasta la fecha, con la participación de 2239 activistas por los derechos de las mujeres, de 141 países. El 65% provenía del sur global y casi el 15% eran mujeres jóvenes menores de 30 años, mientras que el 75% de las personas asistían a un Foro de AWID por primera vez.

El programa del Foro se enfocó en la transformación del poder económico para promover los derechos de las mujeres y la justicia. Se ofrecieron más de 170 sesiones de lo más diversas, incluyendo las sesiones de la caja de herramientas económicas feministas para forjar habilidades, sesiones interactivas que representaron los 10 temas del Foro, discusiones en profundidad y las mesas redondas de solidaridad. 

Aprovechando el impulso del Foro, hemos transformado la página web en un centro de recursos y aprendizaje que se basa en el contenido generado por las participantes mediante recursos multimedia sobre todos los componentes del Foro.

Crear | Résister | Transform : visite guidée du Festival

Alors que le capitalisme hétéropatriarcal s’acharne à nous contraindre au consumérisme et à la conformité, nous constatons que nos luttes sont cloisonnées et séparées par des frontières aussi bien physiques que virtuelles.

Avec les défis supplémentaires d’une pandémie mondiale à surmonter, cette stratégie du « diviser pour mieux régner » a favorisé l’expansion de l’exploitation dans de nombreux domaines.

Malgré tout, du 1er au 30 septembre 2021, le festival Crear | Résister | Transform : un festival dédié aux mouvements féministes ! de l’AWID nous a emmené·e·s à la découverte de ce que cela signifiait d’incarner nos réalités dans des espaces virtuels. Lors du festival, des activistes féministes du monde entier se sont réuni·e·s non seulement pour partager des expériences de libertés, de résistances et de solidarités transfrontalières durement gagnées, mais aussi pour exprimer ce à quoi pourrait ressembler une forme transnationale d’unité. 

C’est précisément cette unité qui a le potentiel de dépasser les frontières, permettant de tisser une vision de l’avenir qui est transformatrice parce qu’abolitionniste et anticapitaliste. À travers des infrastructures numériques que nous avons investies avec notre queerness, notre résistance et nos imaginaires, le festival a présenté un moyen de se détourner des systèmes qui nous rendent complices de l’oppression des autres et de nous-mêmes. 

Si Audre Lorde nous a appris que « les outils du maître ne détruiront jamais la maison du maître », Sara Ahmed nous a montré en revanche que nous pouvons en faire mauvais usage. Le fait d’avoir à créer un espace de rassemblement, en dépit de toutes les autres contraintes pesant sur nos emplois du temps, nous a permis d’imaginer une façon de rompre avec la réalité du capitalisme hétéropatriarcal. 

Maintenant, si nous comprenons le rassemblement comme une forme de plaisir, il devient alors possible de faire le lien entre le plaisir transgressif et la résistance transnationale/transdigitale; entre les types de plaisir qui bousculent les frontières d’une part, et la queerness, la théâtralité, la lutte pour la terre et les autochtones, l’anticapitalisme et l’organisation anticoloniale d’autre part.

La présente édition a tenté de donner une idée de la manière dont l’exercice de rassemblement du festival a revêtu de multiples formes et imaginations. Au-delà des collaborations directes avec certain·e·s de ses orateurices et rêveur·se·s, nous avons fait appel à une pléthore d’autres voix du Sud mondial pour aborder plusieurs de ces sujets et thématiques. Tandis que les dirigeant·es du monde entier se réunissent au Brésil, les mouvements féministes manifestent, se rassemblent et bouleversent le statu quo à la COP30 et partout ailleurs ! Promotion des droits universels et de la justice

Eradiquer les fascismes et les fondamentalismes

Partout sur la planète, les défenseur·e·s féministes, des droits des femmes et de la justice de genre remettent en question les programmes des acteurs fascistes et fondamentalistes. Ces forces opprimantes prennent pour cibles les femmes, les personnes non conformes dans leur identité de genre, leur expression et/ou orientation sexuelle, ainsi que d’autres communautés opprimées.

Les idéologies discriminatoires sapent et s’emparent de nos systèmes et normes en termes de droits humains de manière à ce que seuls certains groupes aient l’exclusivité des droits. Face à cela, l’initiative Promotion des droits universels et de la justice (Advancing Universal Rights and Justice, AURJ) s’attache à promouvoir l’universalité des droits - le principe fondamental selon lequel les droits humains sont le bien de chaque être humain, quelle que soit son identité, et ce sans exception.

Nous créons un espace pour permettre aux mouvements et à nos allié·e·s féministes, en faveur des droits humains et de la justice de genre de se reconnaître, d’élaborer des stratégies et de recourir à des actions collectives afin de contrecarrer l’influence et l’impact des acteurs anti-droits. Nous cherchons également à faire avancer les cadres, les normes et les propositions féministes et relatifs aux droits des femmes, ainsi qu’à protéger et promouvoir l’universalité des droits.  

Nos actions

A travers cette initiative, nous visons à :

  • Enrichir nos connaissances : Dans le cadre du rôle de premier plan que nous assurons sur la plateforme collaborative, l’Observatoire de l'universalité des droits (Observatory on the Universality of Rights, OURs), l’AWID soutient les mouvements féministes, en faveur des droits des femmes et de la justice de genre en diffusant et vulgarisant des connaissances et des messages clés concernant les acteurs anti-droits, leurs stratégies et leur impact au sein des organismes internationaux de protection des droits humains.

  • Promouvoir des programmes féministes : Nous faisons des alliances avec des partenaires au sein d’espaces internationaux dédiés aux droits humains, notamment le Conseil des droits de l’homme, la Commission de la population et du développement, la Commission de la condition de la femme et l’Assemblée générale de l’ONU.

  • Créer et élargir les alternatives : Nous impliquons nos membres afin de garantir que les engagements, les résolutions et les normes à l’échelle internationale sont reflétées et réintroduites dans l’organisation d’autres espaces à l’échelle locale, nationale et régionale.

  • Mobiliser des actions solidaires : Nous agissons aux côtés de défenseuses des droits humains (women human rights defenders, WHRD), y compris de défenseur·e·s trans et intersexes et de jeunes féministes, et oeuvrons à contester les fondamentalismes et les fascismes tout en attirant l’attention sur les situations à risque.

The AWID International Forum is both a global community event and a space of radical personal transformation. A one-of-a-kind convening, the Forum brings together feminist, women’s rights, gender justice, LBTQI+ and allied movements, in all our diversity and humanity, to connect, heal and thrive. The Forum is a place where Global South feminists and historically marginalized communities take center stage, strategizing with each other and allied movements, funders and policy-makers, in order to shift power, make alliances, and usher in a different, better world.

Rising Together: Connect, Heal, Thrive

The Forum theme––Rising Together––is an invitation to engage with our whole selves, to connect with each other in focused, caring and brave ways, so that we can feel the heartbeat of global movements and rise together to meet the challenges of these times.

Feminist, women’s rights, gender justice, LBTQI+ and allied movements around the world are at a critical juncture, facing a powerful backlash on previously-won rights and freedoms. Recent years have brought the rapid rise of authoritarianisms, the violent repression of civil society and criminalization of women and gender-diverse human rights defenders, escalating war and conflict in many parts of our world, the continued perpetuation of economic injustices, and the intersecting health, ecological and climate crises.

Our movements are reeling and, at the same time, seeking to build and maintain the strength and fortitude required for the work ahead. We can't do this work alone, in our silos. Connection and healing are essential to transforming persistent power imbalances and fault lines within our own movements. We must work and strategize in interconnected ways, so that we can thrive together. The AWID Forum fosters that vital ingredient of interconnectedness in the staying power, growth and transformative influence of feminist organizing globally.

Sexting Like a Feminist: Humor in the Digital Feminist Revolution

On September 2nd, 2021, the amazing feminist and social justice activists of AWID’s Crear | Résister | Transform festival came together not only to share resistance strategies, co-create, and transform the world, but also to talk dirty on Twitter.

The exercise was led by Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah, co-founder of the blog Adventures From The Bedrooms of African Women and author of The Sex Lives of African Women, who paired up with the Pan-Africanist digital queer womanist platform AfroFemHub, to ask the question: How can we safely and consensually explore our pleasure, desires, and fantasies via text?

Basically: How would a feminist sext?

I believe this is a critically important question because it looks at the larger issue of how one navigates the online world with a feminist understanding. Under capitalism, discourse around bodies and sex can be dehumanizing and distorting, and navigating sexual pleasure in virtual spaces can feel performative. So seeking out avenues where we can explore how we share our desire in ways that are affirming and enthusiastic can push back against dominant models of presentation and consumption to reclaim these spaces as sites for authentic engagement, proving that all sexting should be just that: feminist.

Plus, allowing feminist discourse to embody its playful side in online discourse helps reframe a popular narrative that feminist engagement is joyless and dour. But as we know, having fun is part of our politics, and an inherent part of what it means to be feminist.

Using the hashtag #SextLikeAFeminist, scholars and activists from all over the world chimed in with their thirstiest feminist tweets, and here are my top ten.

As these tweets show, it turns out that sexting like a feminist is sexy, funny – and horny. Yet, it never loses sight of its commitment to equity and justice.

What you need to know

  • Priority will be given to activities that facilitate and encourage connection and interaction among participants. If your activity can be held online or hybrid (connecting participants on-site and online), please consider how to generate genuine engagement and active participation from online participants.
  • We encourage cross-movement, cross-regional and inter-generational encounters, dialogues and exchanges.
  • Please design your activity in a way that allows flexibility in the number of participants. While a few activities may be limited to smaller groups, the majority will need to accommodate larger numbers.
  • If your activity fits a number of formats or none, you will be able to indicate as such on the application form.

Languages in which you can submit your activity

  • Languages for Applications: Applications will be accepted in English, French, Spanish, Thai and Arabic.
  • Languages at the Forum: Simultaneous interpretation will be provided at the Forum Plenary Sessions in English, French, Spanish, Thai, and Arabic as well as ISL (International Sign Language) and possibly more. For all other activities, interpretation will be offered in some––but not all––of these languages, and possibly others, such as Swahili and Portuguese.
